My pediatrician and I have an understanding. He knows we're uninsured and every time I bring one of the kids in for a visit, he makes the same offer; pay $X amount today and mail me the bill- I'll write the rest off. I have yet to mail him back one of the bills, but it's the gesture that counts.
I'm a cautious parent, but not over the top. I don't feel compelled at my next visit to bring an itemized list of each scratch, bump and sneeze. If it wasn't worthy of a Dr. appointment, it goes away... He gets it; you can't report every sniffle.
The real problem with Obamacare is not the Government looking over your doctor's shoulder; it's the HMO big government is shoving into the room... The HMO who is going to force that itemized sniffle list into the visit, the HMO who is going to coerce the cheapest possible remedy so they don't have to pay out, the HMO who is watching for the opportunity to cut us off or raise our prices. The HMO that tells me which doctor I can and cannot see. And suppose I and my doctor decide together that the HMO recommendation isn't our best option, well I still have to write Mr. HMO CEO a check for their thoughts... and pay again for the treatment HMO-guy won't cover!
I'm not sure where Obama draws the, "Drain on the system" line... I might be one of those "drains" who could buy insurance and doesn't... screwing it up for everyone. I'm also the guy who doesn't have to ask permission from some Bureaucrat HMO and fill out a permission slip before following doctors orders. We also pay out of pocket for our pills, our visits, our surgeries, our pregnancies... I had my littlest one at a birth center after the obstetrician was trying to force a C-Section; no permission from government or HMO needed- free market that! I don't really know what would have cost more; the insurance or the out of pocket, and maybe we're paying more. The point is, there's some other point between hiding from hospital bills and sleeping well because you have insurance (or rather the card.)
Then there's the next issue... pacing by your mailbox waiting to find out if your hospital visit is going to be covered.
Look, I'm already paying in. They take $100 bucks or so out of our check every month for Medicare taxes. And it wouldn't kill us if Obama and Government slid their hand in our pocket with a bargain... We'll expand Medicare/ Medicaid to every taxpayer and you're going to pony up a few hundred bucks a month extra, ok? I might still be saving money to refuse, 'Get out of my paycheck, Uncle Sam." I'm only paying $300 a year out of pocket. But I could justify the trade-off, because who's to say my next kid doesn't have Down Syndrome, or I don't catch the Bubonic Plague? But there's no damn way, Big Government, you're bringing that fat sweaty HMO to video the birth... It's like bringing the
Grinch who stole Christmas to your nieces birthday party.
Big Government, Obama, the truth is I don't mind you sitting in the waiting room and checking on the doctor now and then. But don't force that HMO into my doctors visits... unless of course the visit is on the house.
