According to NASA, 97% of Greenland’s surface ice has melted within the span of a few days. According to NASA, the normal melt throughout the summer is around 57% and this increase implies terrible omens. They’ve suggested a future of vanishing islands, flooded coastlines and disrupted weather.
Already, much of the world is reeling from bizarre weather this year; record heat waves followed by a nearly missing winter, severe to extreme drought through the U.S., heavy rain and floods in Europe. Drought in 2012 shrunk this year’s crops to nearly half.
According to Fox News, the 4 day fire-sale on Greenland’s ice sheet is ‘hot air’; in fact, says Fox, it’s part of the region’s pattern. They’ve called hot air on Climate Change too, saying the Earth has endured several periods of heating and cooling… NASA’s just out to terrify us, evidently.
Suppose conservatives are exactly right
So, suppose a minute the far right is right: ‘The Earth has heated up before. There‘s no need to go driving less or capping carbon.’ The problem with this logic is: nobody’s worried that the structure of the planet is going away because of warming… Last big freeze, though caused the extinction of most species. The Earth is going to truck on ahead regardless of the weather and temps; Fox is (hypothetically) right. Humans and our co-planetary species just won’t be around to discuss it.
Now we suppose they’re right about the Glacial melt in Greenland too… It’s just 45% more ice than usual, after all. However, human caused or not, it doesn’t change the forecast. The Gulf Stream responsible for regulating heat and cold throughout the Atlantic still poses the ultimate risk of slowing or stopping. Slowing the Gulf stream means a possible ice age for the North-most coasts (http://www.bbc.co.uk/climate/impact/gulf_stream.shtml) and hot water closer to the equator. Glaciers melting into oceans will still affect species living inside it (see fish price increases) and raise sea levels.
Best case scenario, we’re a little screwed, and at risk for extinction, but more importantly: it’s not our fault!
NASA: harbingers of fear and doom
If you ask the GOP, NASA scientists just don’t understand how to interpret data to the same expert standards as Right-wing politicians and Fox News pundits. NASA just doesn’t have the same firm grasp on science as conservatives. There’s a simple explanation: unlike conservative leaders (who can be impartial, because they have absolutely nothing at stake), NASA scientists clearly skew information in favor of doomsday, possibly as part of a left wing agenda, but more likely because they just enjoy terrifying us.
